Reading in Bed

Margaret and Gus

When's Dinner?

This was William's pitiful face as he waited for the Wiener Schnitzel to be ready the other night. Sometimes 5 minutes can seem like forever, especially when you're four.

The Wiener Schnitzel Waltz, by Tom Lehrer

TOM LEHRER REVISITED
11. The Wiener Schnitzel Waltz

Do you remember the night I held you so tight,
As we danced to the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz?
The music was gay, and the setting was Viennese,
Your hair wore some roses (or perhaps they were peonies),
I was blind to your obvious faults,
As we danced 'cross the scene
To the strains of the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz.

Oh, I drank some champagne from your shoe, la-la-la.
I was drunk by the time I got through, la-la-la.
For I didn't know as I raised that cup,
It had taken two bottles to fill the thing up.
It was I who stepped on your dress, la-la-la.
The skirts all came off, I confess, la-la-la.
Revealing for all of the others to see
Just what it was that endeared you to me...

I remember the night I held you so tight,
As we danced to the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz.
Your lips were like wine (if you'll pardon the simile),
The music was lovely and quite Rudolf Friml'y*.
I drank wine, you drank chocolate malts,
And we both turned quite green
To the strains of the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz.

This evening, Nadia taught me how to make Wiener Schnitzel!
We fried 'em up...
until they were done.

Kaesespaetzle is the Mac and Cheese of South Germany

Today I learned how to make Kaesespaetzle. I'll add the recipe later, but this is what it looked like. You feed the batter through a cheese-grater-deely into boiling salt water...
...and wait a few minutes until it looks like this.

Then, you add the grated Emmentaler cheese and carmalized onions with salt, pepper, and bullion.

And it tastes really good.
If you eat a lot of it while hard cider drinking , it is really difficult later to bloggen.
I'll ewdit this post tomorrow.
good night!

Photos from Oma's Camera, Voralberg, Austria

On our way to Austria, William got a very special treat: he got to go to a McDonald's! I don't think we had been to one in a year and a half! The playground was fun, and the food was the same as always. Felt like America!
William had been asleep in the car, so I carried him up the first part of the mountain until he was more awake.

William walked up the hard parts of the mountain all by himself!

Oma, on a hike from Ludescherberg to Raggal and back with me!

So pretty!

We took a gondola to see this brilliantly blue mountain-top glacial lake.

The hills are alive...

Family Vacation in Austria

We have just returned from a 5 day trip to the Austrian Alps (Vorarlberg) with Oma and Grandpa McCrea. The mountains were so beautiful! Here are lots of pictures of everybody but Sean...he was taking the pictures and I forgot to take one of him (whoops!) ...anyway, I'm sure Ineke has a picture of him somewhere on her camera....

Christmas in July!

Oma and Grandpa are here to visit! They came hauling *A LOT* of presents, including toys and clothes and...
books, and...

even a bicycle!! This is Sean's old bicycle that his grandfather sent him from Holland years ago - now back on this side of the ocean, newly painted and reworked by William's grandpa and at the ready for when William grows his feet just one or two centimeters in the direction of the pedals!
Thank you! , Oma and Grandpa!
